Lunch at Talisay The Garden Cafe

Just this month, we went to Quezon City for some errands. Since we rarely go to QC, I did some research beforehand and looked for popular restaurants near the area. One of the restaurants that came up was Talisay The Garden Cafe, a restaurant by Chef Tatung Sarthou.

We had already eaten at Lore by Chef Tatung, and since we enjoyed the experience, I thought Talisay would be worth trying as well. So I told my husband that we should have lunch there.

Talisay The Garden Cafe in Quezon City

Talisay The Garden Cafe is located along Maginhawa Street in the UP Village area of Quezon City. The restaurant is known for its garden setting and Filipino-Cebuano-inspired dishes, with a menu that puts a modern spin on familiar regional flavors. The restaurant is housed in a renovated 1960s-style home, giving it a more relaxed and homey atmosphere rather than the usual restaurant feel.

The garden is also one of the things that makes Talisay appealing. It feels like a little green space tucked into the busy Maginhawa area, making it a nice place for a leisurely lunch, a date, or a meal with family and friends.

The restaurant is currently listed as open daily from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Parking, however, is limited, so if you're driving, it's something to keep in mind.

Our Lunch at Talisay

After finishing our errands in Quezon City, we headed to Talisay The Garden Cafe. Good thing we were able to find a parking spot because parking in the area can be a challenge.

Once we were seated, the staff gave us the menu. I already had an idea of what I wanted because I had researched the restaurant before our visit.

The staff mentioned that their dishes are generally good for two to three people. We are a family of three, but since we wanted to try several dishes, we decided to order three items anyway.

For lunch, we ordered:
· Molo Soup – ₱360
· Lengua Con Setas – ₱880
· Jamon de Talisay – ₱880
· Rice – ₱70 per cup
· Plus service charge

The prices above were what we paid during our visit, so keep in mind that restaurant prices may change.

Complimentary Banana Chips

After we ordered, the staff served us complimentary banana chips and water while we waited for our food.

The Food Presentation

Our food came out surprisingly fast. All three dishes were served in around 10 minutes, which was impressive considering we ordered three dishes.

One thing I noticed during our visit was that the presentation of the food looked different from the photos I had seen online.

I had looked at several older blog posts before going to Talisay, and some of the photos were already several years old. So I'm not sure if the plating has changed over the years or if the restaurant simply presents some dishes differently now.

Molo Soup

The Molo Soup came with pork dumplings wrapped in wonton wrappers, served in a chicken broth with chicken and chopped shrimps.

This was one of the dishes we enjoyed. The soup was comforting and flavorful, and it was a nice way to start our meal.

Jamon de Talisay

The Jamon de Talisay is described as cured pork slabs roasted for five hours in a brick oven and finished with a pineapple glaze.

This was another dish that we enjoyed. Compared with the lengua, this was a dish that we were much happier with.

If you're dining with a few people, this is also the kind of dish that works well for sharing.

Lengua Con Setas

The Lengua Con Setas is ox tongue served in a white wine cream sauce with fresh mushrooms and green olives.

This was actually the dish I was most curious about because lengua is one of our favorite dishes. Unfortunately, this was also the dish that disappointed us the most.

The sauce was creamy and flavorful enough, but the lengua itself was sliced very thinly. As in, parang bacon sa nipis. In fact, the sliced mushrooms were thicker than the pieces of lengua.

Because of this, we couldn't really appreciate the texture and flavor of the ox tongue. When we think of lengua, we usually prefer the thicker, more substantial slices like the ones we've had at Conti's and Alba Restaurante.

For a ₱880 dish, I was expecting more from it. We didn't want to waste the leftovers, though, so we took the remaining lengua home.

Is Talisay The Garden Cafe Worth Visiting?

Overall, we had a pleasant lunch at Talisay The Garden Cafe.

I particularly enjoyed the Molo Soup and Jamon de Talisay, while the Lengua Con Setas didn't quite meet our expectations. The service was good, and the food was served quickly, which I appreciated.

However, price is something to consider. Since we had also recently eaten at Lore by Chef Tatung, I personally found Talisay Garden Cafe more expensive based on what we ordered and what we got from the meal.

Would I recommend trying Talisay? Yes, especially if you're curious about Chef Tatung's Filipino-Cebuano dishes and want to experience the garden setting. Just manage your expectations when it comes to the price, and if you're a big fan of lengua like we are, you may want to consider trying some of their other dishes instead.

As for us, I'm glad we tried it. We enjoyed some of the dishes, the service was good, and at least now we know what to expect on our next visit to Maginhawa.

Ippon Yari Alabang West Parade: A Recognition Day Family Lunch

Back-to-school season is just around the corner, but our Recognition Day celebration was only held last week. After the event, I asked my son where he wanted to celebrate, and without hesitation, he said, "Ippon Yari."

In my mind, I was thinking, "Doon ulit?" I had been searching for a new restaurant to try for a change, but in the end, we settled on Ippon Yari. Baka ako pa ang masisi kung hindi masarap ang bagong suggestion ko. Hehehe!

After the Recognition Day program, we still had time to go home and change clothes before heading to Ippon Yari at Alabang West Parade. We arrived just in time for their 11:00 AM opening.

Since it was my mom’s first visit to Ippon Yari, we chose one of their traditional Japanese-style tables where guests remove their shoes before sitting. It added a nice touch to the dining experience.

Whenever we dine here, my usual order is the Tonkatsu, while my son always goes for the Chashumen. My husband ordered the Beef Curry, and my mom initially chose the Chirashi Sushi. However, I also suggested the Shogayaki + Teishoku because I thought she might prefer a hot meal.

What We Ordered

· Tonkatsu – PHP 340 + Teishoku (Set Meal) – PHP 110
· Chashumen – PHP 490
· Beef Curry – PHP 480
· Chirashi Sushi  – PHP 590
· Shogayaki – PHP 320 + Teishoku (Set Meal) – PHP 110

As usual, while waiting for our food, the staff served complimentary wet towels, salad, water, and hot tea.

When our orders arrived, I was surprised to discover that the Chirashi Sushi was actually served as a rice bowl. Since I had also ordered the Shogayaki Set Meal for my mom, she ended up with two servings of rice. Hehehe!

While waiting for the bill, the staff also served complimentary iced coffee. It was the perfect way to cap off our satisfying lunch and one of those little extras that make dining at Ippon Yari even more memorable.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, especially my mom. I think she appreciated the change since she usually eats at Filipino restaurants with my aunt. It was a nice break from her usual dining routine and a great way to celebrate my son's achievement.

Once again, Ippon Yari proved to be a reliable choice for family celebrations. The food was satisfying, the service was attentive, and everyone left happy and full.

Racks Restaurant Revisited: A Personal Throwback and Update

Just this month, we had lunch at Racks. I honestly couldn’t remember the last time we ate there, so I checked my blog and to my surprise, my first and last post about it was way back in 2013! Sharing that old entry here for a little price comparison. Hehehe!

March 18, 2013

“We revisited Racks restaurant last week after finishing my mom’s errands and getting my son’s X-ray results. It had been a while since our last visit. I used to love eating at Racks when I was in college because they had meals for less than PHP100 but that was a decade ago.

I knew their servings were big, so my son and I shared my order since he only wanted the corn. We ordered the Racks Classic Pork Ribs (P300+) and Sweet Smoky Ribs (P350+).

While waiting for our food, my son asked for a pen and started doodling. The staff noticed and gave him coloring paper and crayons. Kudos for the service!”

Fast forward to 2026…

We checked out their menu and noticed the Executive Sets and Blue Plate Specials, but we ended up choosing the Executive Sets. Each meal includes a glass of House Blend Iced Tea, steamed rice, and a side salad.

My husband initially wanted the Ribeye Steak, but it wasn’t available, so he ordered the Classic Pork Ribs (PHP635). I went with the Best Surf and Turf (PHP475).

Each set also comes with garlic bread plus one side dish. You can choose from coleslaw, corn and carrots, mac and cheese, gravy fries, house mashed potato, pasta salad, potato salad, or baked beans.

When they served our drinks, I was a bit surprised; it wasn’t iced tea but soft drinks, and there was no explanation given.

After about 15 minutes, our food arrived. I have to admit, I was a little disappointed because it wasn’t warm parang room temperature na. The only thing that was still warm was the fried fish. Honestly, if I had known, I would’ve just ordered the Fish and Chips Blue Plate (PHP385) instead. For my husband’s order, yung baked beans ang mainit.

In the end, my husband finished most of my food since he really enjoys Racks’ pork ribs.

Overall, it was interesting to revisit Racks after so many years and see how much has changed in terms of pricing and menu offerings. While my recent experience had a few disappointments, it was still a nostalgic trip back to a place I once enjoyed. It’s always nice to revisit old favorites and compare past and present experiences, even if just for the memories

Celebrating Our 20th Wedding Anniversary at Cantabria by Chele Gonzalez

A Spanish Fine Dining Experience in Metro Manila

If you are looking for a fine dining restaurant in Metro Manila for special occasions, Cantabria by Chele Gonzalez is definitely worth considering. Known for its Spanish-inspired tasting menus and recognition in the Michelin Guide, the restaurant offers a curated tasting menu dining experience that changes every quarter.

We recently visited this Spanish fine dining restaurant in Manila to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary, and it turned out to be a memorable experience for our family.

Our Anniversary Celebration

This year marked a huge milestone for us, our 20th wedding anniversary. We originally planned an anniversary getaway, but unfortunately, it had to be canceled due to circumstances beyond our control. Thankfully, we were able to rebook the trip for another time.

Since our travel plan didn’t push through, we decided to celebrate by dining out instead. Our first plan was to eat at a buffet restaurant, but when my husband called to make a reservation, they were already fully booked for the entire week.

That’s when I remembered Cantabria by Chele Gonzalez, which I first discovered during our Christmas Staycation at The Westin Manila.

A Michelin-Recognized Restaurant in the Philippines

Cantabria by Chele Gonzalez is one of the restaurants in the Philippines recognized in the Michelin Guide, making it one of the Michelin-recognized restaurants in the Philippines that food lovers often talk about.

This was actually the second Michelin-recognized restaurant that we have tried. The restaurant focuses on Spanish flavors inspired by the Cantabria region of Spain, presented through a thoughtfully prepared tasting menu.

The restaurant is definitely on the expensive side, but it is perfect for special occasions like anniversaries, birthdays, or celebrations.

Why I Enjoy Tasting Menu Dining

After trying set menu dining experiences at several restaurants such as:

Nawa Wellness
Tiger Leaf Asian
Samira by Chele

I have learned to appreciate this kind of fine dining tasting menu experience.

What I like about it is that:

There is no rush while eating
You get to try multiple dishes from appetizer to dessert
Every course feels like a pleasant surprise

The staff usually explains each dish when it is served. However, during our visit there were two dishes that were not explained, probably because a different server brought them to the table.

Reservation and Dining Experience

My husband made our reservation through the restaurant’s website and received a confirmation right away. This time, we also brought our son so he could experience a fine dining tasting menu in Manila.

We ordered the 5-Course Set Menu, which costs PHP 2,900 per person plus service charge.

Restaurant Hours:

Lunch: 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM
Dinner: 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM

The restaurant’s set menu changes every quarter, and during our visit we were able to try the new menu that started on January 6, 2026.

5-Course Set Menu

Amuse Bouche

Anchoa, Queso y Pistachio
Croqueta de Jamon
Vieiras, Apionabo y Chocolate Blanco

First Course
Canelon de Ave Escabechada, Yogur y Granada

Second Course
Huevo Poche, Setas Confitadas al Jerez, Migas y Parmentier Trufada

Third Course
Pescado en Amarillo

Fourth Course
Solomillo, Pimientos Asados y Pil Pil Tuetano a la Brasa

Fifth Course
Sobaomisu

Our Favorite Dishes

We literally enjoyed our tasting menu lunch from 11:30 AM until 2:00 PM. By the end of the meal, we were completely full.

There was no need for take-out because we managed to finish everything including the complimentary anniversary cake.

My personal favorites from the menu were:

the amuse bouche
the third course
the fourth course
and of course the fifth course dessert

Each dish was beautifully presented and thoughtfully prepared, making the entire fine dining experience in Manila even more special.

A Simple Anniversary Cake

To make the celebration extra special, we also bought a mini carrot cake to serve as our anniversary cake.

I created a DIY wedding cake topper using an image from Cricut Design Space, which added a nice personal touch to our celebration.

Overall, it was a memorable way to celebrate two decades of marriage, good food, a relaxed dining experience, and quality time with family.

Birthday Celebration at Lugang Cafe

June is my husband’s birthday month, so last May, I informed him of all the dining promos that I’ve seen online. The are hotel buffet and restaurant promos, but he said “ayaw daw niya maghotel buffet” so we ended up at Lugang Cafe since hindi pa namin natatry.

We took advantage of the 11th Feast All You Can promo for PHP688 + Service Charge. This includes unlimited dim sum, noodles, soup, fried rice, and drinks. For PHP888 + Service Charge, you can add one main dish. The promo is already over, so I’m just sharing our experience.

My husband just called to reserve, and we chose Lugang Cafe at SM Aura. We arrived around 11AM so konti pa lang kumakain. Upon seated, they gave us the Feast All You Can Menu and answer sheet.

We were a group of six people and ordered 1 Steamed Pork Xiao Long Bao, 1 Pork and Vegetable Dumpling, 1 Vietnamese Egg Roll, 1 Crispy Eggplant with Teriyaki Sauce, 3 Fried Rice, 3 Noodles, and 3 Soup.

For the main dish, we ordered Taiwanese Fried Pork Chop, Sweet and Sour Pork with Pineapple, Garlic Buttered Shrimp, Steamed Fish Fillet with Tausi, Spicy Clams with Basil, and Steamed Pomfret with Light Soy Sauce.

After our first order, nag follow-up kami ng 1 Steamed Pork Xiao Long Bao, 1 Steamed Pork Xiao Long Bao with XO Sauce, 1 Tofu with Preserved Egg and Pork Floss, and 1 Steamed Chicken Feet with Black Bean Sauce.

Among the main dishes, yung Taiwanese Pork Chop ang hindi namin type, walang lasang pork, puro breading yung nalalasahan namin, I was expecting din yung Taiwanese Pork Chop na nakain namin sa Taiwan. But the rest of the main dishes taste good. For dim sum, appetizers, noodles, soup, and fried rice, okay lang for us.

We were done after an hour, and based on our order, parang hindi namin nasulit yung promo, so parang nagsisisi si hubby. Sana naghotel buffet na lang kami, siguro nag-expect lang kami na baka same experience sa lunch namin sa Din Tai Fung at Taipei 101. Naenjoy kasi namin yung dimsum experience namin doon.
