Day 3: DIY Vigan Tour

Thirteen years ago, I rented a van to tour us around Laoag, Vigan, and Pagudpud. We visited most of the major tourist spots, so when we returned to Vigan, I had second thoughts about whether to book a tour or just go for a DIY experience.

I checked the Klook website for possible options:

Hotel Luna also offers a Vigan City Tour for PHP 5,500 (minimum of 1 person, maximum of 5). But since we were only three people, I felt like we could save more with a DIY tour—so we went to Vigan without a fixed itinerary.

If I had booked the Hotel Luna Vigan City Tour, here are the places we would’ve visited:

Vigan Cathedral
Padre Jose Burgos Museum
Syquia Mansion (with entrance fees)
Crisologo Museum
Burnayan (Jar Making)
Baluarte (Mini Zoo)
Hidden Garden (Lunch)
Camangaan Loom Weaving
Bantay Bell Tower
Calle Crisologo
Hotel Museum Tour at Hotel Luna

After reading the list, I realized there were three tourist spots we hadn’t visited during our first trip: Padre Jose Burgos Museum, Hidden Garden, and the Hotel Luna Museum.

Calle Crisologo

We started our tour a little past 8 AM. Our first stop was Calle Crisologo. We walked around, took pictures, and checked if any stores were open. After going around, we found ourselves back at Hotel Luna. I asked the guard how much the fare for the tricycle to Bantay Bell Tower was. What a coincidence, a tricycle arrived, and the driver offered us a Vigan City Tour for PHP 800.

I think it was a good deal—better than hopping from one tricycle to another. We also let the driver decide the order of the destinations.

DIY Vigan Tour

Parish of Saint Augustine of Hippo and Bantay Bell Tower

Our first stop was the Parish of Saint Augustine of Hippo and the Bantay Bell Tower. The tower once served as a watchtower during the Spanish Colonial Era.

Thirteen years ago, we were lucky to go inside the bell tower, and this was the view. But during our latest visit, we couldn’t get near it anymore. Part of the structure crumbled on July 27, 2022, due to a magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Abra and nearby provinces.

There’s no entrance fee, but you’ll need to register. The staff will gently remind you about the donation box. One staff member followed us and offered to take our pictures—so we ended up with tons of fun shots, like we were at the Leaning Tower of Pisa. He was really good at taking photos!

After that, we made a quick stop at the church.

Crisologo Museum

Crisologo Museum is the ancestral home of the late Congressman Floro S. Crisologo. The museum provides insight into his life and tragic death.

Opening Hours: 9 AM to 5 PM, Mondays to Saturdays
Entrance Fee: None (Donations only)

Baluarte Zoo

Syquia Mansion was under renovation, so we went straight to Baluarte Zoo. We were hesitant at first because I found out na meron ng entrance fee—it used to be free. We’ve visited a few zoos abroad, and I knew this one was relatively small, but since we were already in Vigan, we decided to go.

Baluarte Zoo Entrance Options:

PHP 100 – Entrance fee only
PHP 150 – Package A with shuttle service
PHP 300 – Package B with shuttle service

We just paid the basic entrance fee. Like last time, we didn’t explore the whole zoo. We just checked out a few birds while waiting for the live show, then left afterward.

Hidden Garden

It was our first time visiting Hidden Garden. The area is quite big, with lots of items to buy and places to eat. I originally planned to have lunch here, but we weren’t hungry yet when we arrived. So, we explored, bought some plants, and picked up souvenirs.

What’s Inside Hidden Garden:

Lilong and Lilang Restaurant
Plant Collection
Grotto Area
Bamboo Groves
Lovers’ Corner
Coffee Shop
Bonsai Garden
Plant Souvenirs
Clean Restrooms (with a small fee)

RG Jar Factory

Thirteen years ago, we only watched how they made pots. Now, visitors can try making a clay jar themselves! My son gave it a try since he didn’t get the chance to do pottery in Sagada. I didn’t join because we were in a bit of a hurry to finish the tour.

We were the only guests at the time, so it felt like a private demo. No entrance fee; donations are appreciated.

Irma’s Longganisa and Bagnet

The driver asked if we wanted to visit a longganisa factory. I thought we’d see how it was made, but it turned out to be just a shop selling bagnet and longganisa. Hehehe! Still, we bought some since we had a fridge in the hotel and a cooler in the car.

Prices:

Bagnet
1 Kilo – PHP 560
3/4 Kilo – PHP 420
1/2 Kilo – PHP 280
1/4 Kilo – PHP 140

Vigan Longganisa
PHP 160 – per dozen (large)
PHP 140 – per dozen (small)

Actually, the bagnet my husband bought for his officemates at Calle Crisologo was cheaper. But maybe the driver earned commission from our orders—that’s probably why the price was higher. Still, both the bagnet and longganisa taste good, so no regrets!

National Museum of the Philippines – Ilocos

Our last stop was the National Museum. No entrance fee or donation needed. It’s an ancestral house built in 1788 and now houses three museums:

Old Carcel Museum – Originally a jailhouse in 1657; President Elpidio Quirino was born here.

Magsingal Museum – Used to be a convent during the American period

Padre Burgos Museum – Previously served as a post office, Philippine Constabulary headquarters, and a branch of the Philippine National Bank

We completed our DIY Vigan City Tour in 4 hours and were back at the hotel before 1 PM.

Calle Crisologo at Night

After sunset, we returned to Calle Crisologo to take some night shots. We were planning to watch the Luneta Park Musical Dancing Fountain at Plaza Salcedo, but I wasn’t sure if the show would push through because it rained. So we just went back to the hotel to pack our stuff.

Day 4 in Sydney Australia: Bondi Hop-On-Hop Off Bus Tour

We have a lot of beautiful beaches in the Philippines so whenever we travel overseas, I don’t usually include beaches on our itinerary. But after watching the Instant Hotel series during the pandemic, nacurious ako sa Bondi Beach. When we went to Sydney last year, I added an extra day for our Hop-On-Hop-Off tour to see Bondi Beach.

I purchased the Essential Ticket of Big Bus Sydney Tour via Klook which is good for 48 Hours. You can read our Sydney Route here.

The first bus on the Bondi Route started slightly late compared to Sydney Route. The first bus leaves Central Station at 9:30AM and at 9:45AM at the Australian Museum. We are fortunate that Hyde Park Inn is just a few minutes walk from the Australian Museum so less travel time.

Archibald Fountain

Since we were a bit early for the bus schedule, we went to Archibald Fountain and Hyde Park Barracks first. You can see the Sydney Eye Tower at the back of the fountain.

Hyde Park Barracks

Just like the Anzec Memorial, we were not able to visit this museum even though this is just a few minutes walk from the hotel. There is no entrance fee but we need to prebook the ticket and I don’t know what time we are going to finish our Hop-On-Hop-Off Tour so I couldn’t prebook a ticket. So we just checked the place and took a picture outside the museum.

It is open every day between 10:AM to 6PM except Good Friday and Christmas Day. Last entry is 4:30PM because a visit would take 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Hyde Park Barracks is a former barracks, hospital, convict accommodation, mint, and courthouse. It has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since July 2010.

After taking a photo, we went to the Australian Museum bus stop. The Bondi Route bus was not on time so we left the Australian Museum, around 10AM. One complete tour of Bondi Route is 1 hour and 30 minutes but we decided to get off at Bus Stop 30 which is Bondi Beach. The Blue Route bus trip is less frequent so we didn’t want to waste our time waiting for the bus.

Bondi Beach

Bondi beach is one of the famous beaches in the world. It is popular with locals and tourists because of its proximity to the city. It is known for its golden sand, surf iconic waves, and blue water. This is where you can see the Icebergs, Bondi Graffiti Wall, Bondi Story Room, and Bondi to Coogee Walking Path.

The beach is about 1km long so dito pa lang mapapagod ka na maglakad. We were there during springtime so it was cloudy, windy, and cold but we did not waste any opportunity, we checked the sea water and walked on the sand.

Bondi to Coogee Walk

One of the most scenic ways to see Sydney is to walk from Bondi to Coogee but the famous coastal walk is 6 km and we didn’t want to drain our energy.

Bondi Beach to Bronte Coastal Walk

Bondi Beach to Bronte Beach is a popular coastal walk with 2.5 km walking trails. You have an ocean and sandstone cliff view. It was a long walk where you could see Bondi Beach, Bondi Icebergs, Mackenzies Point, Mackenzies Bay, Tamarama Beach, and Bronte Beach.

We tried to walk up to Mackenzies Point but we did not continue anymore kasi baka wala na kami energy na maglakad pabalik. Hehehe! So we just walk kung hanggang saan lang kaya ng energy namin.

Lunch at Grumpy’s and Bondi Kahve

Actually, I planned to eat Fish & Chips and Calamari & Chips but we didn’t know where to go so we just ended at Grumpy’s and Bondi Kahve. We just ordered Grumpy’s Meat Lover’s Pizza for AUD29 and Nuggets and Chips for $12.50 (Kid’s Menu).

I remembered the kid’s meal that we ordered at House of Canteen, the serving was big but here, pang kids lang talaga. Hehehe! The pizza is also small too. We just finished our food and we went to the bus stop. On our way to the bus stop, we found a restaurant that serves fish, calamari and chips, etc. Waah! Kung sinipag lang pala kami maglakad, nakain ko sana yung gusto ko kainin.

We rode the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus again and got off at the Australian Museum so we could go back to our hotel and rest.

Australian Maritime Museum and Darling Harbour

Even though we wanted to rest na, we still pushed ourselves to go out so we could maximize our ticket so we went to the Australian Maritime Museum and Darling Harbour. You can visit SEA Life Sydney Aquarium, Wildlife Zoo and Madame Tussauds here but we were not interested so we just walked and enjoyed the view.

Then we walked to the nearest bus stop; we were supposed to go to Chinese Garden pa but we were tired already so we got off near our hotel. We dropped by at the grocery and David’s Kitchen for our food.

End of Day 4, we needed to sleep early because our next day's itinerary was Blue Mountain.

Day 2 in Sydney Australia: Museum Train Station Walking Tour

Our first day was spent traveling; travel time from Manila to Sydney was more than 8 hours and we arrived earlier than expected. We passed Immigration, got our luggage and we went to Customs. We did not bring food only vitamins and medicines, the usual first aid kit so we answered “Yes” on the “Passenger Information Card”. I put our first aid kit on our hand-carry for easy inspection.

Before our trip, I asked our hotel for directions and they gave us 3 options.

1. Ride a train from the airport to Museum Station and walk to the hotel. The fare is around 17.50AUD per person.
2. Ride Airport Shuttle Bus called Airport Connect (pre-booked). The fare is 16AUD per person.
3. Taxi ride, cost ranges from 50AUD - 65AUD for 25 - 35 minutes.

Sydney Airport Train Station

Among the 3 options, we chose the train for convenience so after Customs, we walked to the International Airport Train Station. You can easily find your way because there are signs. We bought an Opal Card at the counter, 40AUD for adults and 30AUD for my 15-year-old son. Opal card is a smartcard ticket that you use to pay for public transport in Sydney such as trains, buses, ferries, and light rail.

Airport Train Fare is so expensive because you need to pay for Gate Pass + Train Fare. As of this writing the Adult Gate Pass is 17AUD and Child Gate Pass is 15AUD. Adult Metro and Train Fares range from 4AUD to 9.84AUD (peak fare) and 2.80AUD to 6.88AUD (off-peak fare).

Hyde Park Inn

Travel time from Sydney International Airport to Museum Station is less than 20 minutes and Hyde Park Inn is just across the train station so commuting was easy. My husband paid the full amount for our stay and since the check-in time was 1PM we just left our luggage and explored the area. You can read my Hyde Park Inn review here

Lunch at David’s Kitchen

We walked until we reached the Pitt Street Mall but we still went back to David’s Kitchen because rice is life. David’s Kitchen offers Malaysian & Asian Cuisine and they serve different dishes so maraming choices. You can dine at the restaurant or you can order for take-out. The price is also budget-friendly compared to other restaurants so we kept coming back for our take-out food.

After lunch, we went back to the hotel and waited for the check-in time. We were able to check in before 1PM. It was a long day for us so we took a rest first before going out.

Museum Train Station Walking Tour

We were supposed to go to China Town and Paddy’s Market but I changed my itinerary when I learned that there are few tourist spots that we can visit near Hyde Park Inn. We can visit the Hyde Park, Hyde Park Barracks, Anzac Memorial, Australian Museum, and St Mary’s Cathedral. No entrance fee for these tourist spots.

The Anzac Memorial is open daily from 9AM to 5PM but we were not able to visit this museum because during our trip, I needed to book a schedule so no walk-in. The Hyde Park Barracks is open daily from 10AM to 6PM but we also needed to pre-book the ticket. So we just took a picture outside and visited the Australian Museum, Hyde Park, and St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Anzac Memorial

Anzac Memorial is a war memorial and a place of commemoration, remembrance, education and reflection.

Hyde Park

Hyde Park is Australia’s oldest park with 16 hectares of open space located in the heart of Central Sydney.

Sydney Tower Eye

Sydney Tower is the tallest structure in Sydney which stands at 309 meters.

Australian Museum

Australian Museum is open every day, except Christmas Day from 10am - 5pm. It is the oldest museum in Australia and a heritage-listed museum.

“Here, in a public museum, the remains of the arts, etc., as existing among them, may be preserved as lasting memorials of the former races inhabiting the lands, when they have ceased to exist." -  George Bennett

St. Mary’s Cathedral

According to their website, ‘’St Mary’s Cathedral stands on the site of the first Catholic Chapel in Australia. Constructed in local sandstone, the Gothic Revival style of its architecture is reminiscent of the great medieval cathedrals of Europe.”

After our walking tour, my son and I went back to the hotel while my husband went to Pitt Street Mall to buy dinner and groceries.
