Day 1: Flying from Manila to Singapore + An Unexpected Sentosa Upgrade

Time flies! I can’t believe it’s been almost a decade since our last family trip to Singapore. My husband frequently visits Singapore for work, but for my son and me, it had been nearly ten years since our last visit. So, I was really excited to have the chance to revisit the country as a family.

Exactly a year ago, I started planning this trip. After eight months of waiting, the day finally came; it was time to explore Singapore for nine days!

From Manila to Singapore

We had an afternoon flight, so we left home after breakfast and headed to the airport. We parked our car at Park N Fly, paid the travel tax, checked in, and exchanged some Singapore Dollars and Indonesian Rupiah.

While waiting for our flight, we stayed at the Marhaba Lounge. This was also our first time flying with Singapore Airlines, and thankfully, our flight was right on schedule.

We arrived at Changi Airport earlier than expected. After collecting our luggage, we decided to take a taxi to our hotel. We had three pieces of luggage, and since it was already rush hour, taking a taxi was the most convenient option for us.
Taxi fare from Changi Airport: SGD 40.84

An Unexpected Upgrade to Sentosa

Our original plan was to stay at Robertson Quay Hotel. I booked three nights in total, but for our first night, something unexpected happened.

The hotel staff offered us a promo: instead of staying at Robertson Quay Hotel for our first night, we could stay at their four-star resort in Sentosa, Siloso Beach Resort.

Of course, we said YES! The only downside? I had to give up my planned food trip to Lau Pa Sat that evening.

Since we would be returning to Robertson Quay Hotel after our Batam, Indonesia trip, we left our two pieces of luggage there and brought only what we needed for 2 nights.

We then took a Grab from Robertson Quay Hotel to Siloso Beach Resort. Grab fare from Robertson Quay Hotel to Siloso Beach Resort: SGD 24.58

Our First Night at Siloso Beach Resort

Check-in was smooth. I simply showed the paper provided by Robertson Quay Hotel, and we were given our room keys.

After all the traveling and transfers, we were already tired. But since we were already in Sentosa, we decided to step outside and check out Siloso Beach.
And the best part? The beach was literally just in front of the resort!

My husband suggested that we walk around a little farther since there were more restaurants in Sentosa. But I was too lazy, and honestly, I wasn’t really in the mood to eat anymore. So, we decided to just have dinner at the resort.

We ordered only two dishes because I wasn’t very hungry. I told them I would just take a few bites from their food.

We ordered:
· Fish and Chips – SGD 19.90
· Grilled Chicken Chop – SGD 19.90
· Plus service charge and GST

The food was just okay. Nothing particularly memorable, but it was convenient since we were already tired from the journey.

Watching the Wings of Time Fireworks

After dinner, we went up to the rooftop to see if we could catch a glimpse of the Wings of Time Fireworks Symphony at 7:40 PM.

We could see (a little) and hear some of the fireworks from the resort, which was nice. However, if you really want to enjoy the full show, you’ll need to purchase tickets and watch it from the designated viewing area.

After that, we headed back to our room to freshen up and prepare for the next part of our trip, Batam, Indonesia!

Filipino passport holders can visit Indonesia visa-free for short stays, but we still needed to complete the required Indonesia Arrival Card and the visa-related form before our trip.
So, we spent some time filling out the forms and making sure everything was ready for our Batam trip the next day.

It had been a long day, from leaving Manila, flying to Singapore, traveling to Sentosa, and unexpectedly getting upgraded to a resort. We were tired, but excited for what was coming next. And just like that, Day 1 of our Singapore adventure came to an end.

Where to Stay in Bohol: Our Stay at The Bellevue Bohol Resort

Looking back, the first time we visited Bohol, we stayed at Metrocentre Hotel and enjoyed a day trip to Panglao Island Nature Resort and Spa. Seventeen years later, we finally had the chance to return to this beautiful province, and this time we stayed at The Bellevue Bohol Resort.

We previously celebrated a birthday staycation at The Bellevue Manila and had a wonderful experience, so I was hoping we'd receive the same warm hospitality in Bohol. One thing we immediately appreciated was the resort's location on Doljo Beach. Since it's away from the busier areas of Panglao, the atmosphere is much quieter and more relaxing.

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, the resort was offering a PHP 23,999 nett package for a two-night stay, which included:

Buffet breakfast for two
Round-trip airport transfers
PHP 1,500 tour rebate
One-hour full-body massage for two at Azurea Spa

For our family trip, however, we booked a Deluxe Room for PHP 9,500 per night, plus PHP 2,500 per night for an additional guest.

Our room rate included:

Daily buffet breakfast for two
Complimentary round-trip airport shuttle
Use of the swimming pool and fitness gym
Complimentary kayak use
Access to the game room
Free Wi-Fi
Welcome drinks
Access to the children's activity center

Although we only booked a Deluxe Room, we were pleasantly surprised when the staff informed us that we had been upgraded. Our room and bathroom were much more spacious and overlooked the garden. It turned out to be the perfect room, especially since we were traveling with two senior citizens.

When we entered our room, another surprise was waiting for us: a towel cake and a complimentary birthday cake. It reminded me of our birthday staycation at The Bellevue Manila, where we had to buy our own birthday cake. Looking back, I realized that both of our Bellevue stays happened while celebrating my husband's birthday. It was a nice coincidence that made the trip even more memorable.

We booked two rooms during our stay. One was for our family, while the other was for the senior citizens traveling with us.

Unfortunately, an unexpected incident happened on our first night at the resort. Because of this, we requested to transfer to another room, which meant giving up our complimentary upgrade. Our new room was smaller and no longer had a garden view, but we appreciated how the staff assisted us throughout the transfer.

The Bellevue Bohol Resort offers plenty of facilities, including an infinity pool, fitness gym, game room, children's play area, and Azurea Spa.

The resort also has several complimentary activities for guests. During our stay, we enjoyed
free kayak use and the Glass Bottom Boat Ride, both of which were fun.

The resort has two restaurants, Lamian and Marea, where we had our breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you'd like to know more about the food, you can also read my other blog posts:

Despite the unexpected incident during our first night, we still had an enjoyable stay. The little touches made a big difference, from the welcome drinks and native necklace souvenirs to the midnight snacks, complimentary activities, birthday cakes served both in our room and at the restaurant, a 10% dining discount voucher, and complimentary drinks or dessert.

Even if you don't have any tours planned, you'll still find plenty of things to do within the resort, making it a great place to simply relax and unwind. Most importantly, the staff consistently provided excellent service from the moment we arrived until we headed home.

Overall, our stay at The Bellevue Bohol Resort was a memorable one. While no trip is ever perfect, the resort's comfortable accommodations, relaxing atmosphere, thoughtful gestures, and excellent customer service made our family vacation in Bohol one to remember.

Day 2: From Daet to Calaguas Island – A Journey Worth Every Mile

The Philippines is home to more than 7,600 islands, and each one offers a different kind of adventure. Sometimes, traveling from one island to another feels like going on an international trip because of the long journey, but the destination always makes it worthwhile.

After spending our first day traveling from Cubao to Daet via DLTB Bus and resting overnight at One Platinum Hotel, we finally woke up excited for the highlight of our trip, Calaguas Island.

Early Morning Trip to Vinzons Port

We booked the Calaguas White Sand Resort package, and according to our confirmation voucher, our call time at Vinzons Port was 7:00 AM. We woke up early, enjoyed our pre-ordered packed breakfast at around 6:00 AM, checked out of the hotel, and headed to the port.

Since we rented a van, the drive took less than 20 minutes, and we arrived about 15 minutes before our scheduled call time. I honestly didn't expect the port to be that busy. Finding our assigned boat operator turned out to be more challenging than we expected, and it took us almost 20 minutes before we finally found him.

Before boarding, everyone had to fill out the boat manifest. Afterward, we were asked to place all our bags inside large plastic bags before the porters loaded them onto the boat. This helps protect your luggage from getting wet during the boat ride, especially if the sea is rough or there are splashes along the way.

The plastic bags are available for purchase at the port for PHP35 each or 3 bags for PHP100. We found them worth buying, especially for protecting our clothes, gadgets, and other valuables.

On our boat, we were the only guests from Calaguas White Sand Resort, but the trip wasn't exclusive to one resort. The boat waited for passengers from different resorts, but once it departed, it wouldn't wait for anyone running late.

When Travel Doesn't Go as Planned

Unfortunately, my husband's overnight bus from Cubao was delayed by almost three hours. To help him catch up with us, the bus conductor dropped him off at a nearby area instead of the usual terminal so he could get to Vinzons Port faster.

From there, he hired a tricycle to the port and paid PHP100 for the ride. He did everything he could to make it, but he missed our original 7:00 AM call time.

Our boat finally departed at around 7:55 AM, and just a few minutes after we left the port, he arrived. Thankfully, he was still able to catch the next available boat bound for Calaguas Island.

Finally Arriving in Calaguas Island

After nearly two hours at sea, we finally arrived at Calaguas Island.

Seeing its crystal-clear turquoise waters and powdery white sand instantly made the long journey worth it. It had been on my travel bucket list for years, and finally experiencing it in person was even better than I had imagined.

We were welcomed with refreshing drinks and snacks upon arrival. About 35 minutes later, my husband's boat finally reached the island. Sadly, he missed the welcome snack because it was only served once per group, but what mattered most was that we were finally together in paradise.

Disconnecting to Reconnect

One thing you'll immediately notice in Calaguas is how different life feels.

Electricity is only available at night, no phone signal, and no Wi-Fi. For the next three days and two nights, we traded notifications and screens for the sound of the waves and peaceful island mornings.

It was the perfect reminder that sometimes, disconnecting from technology helps us reconnect with nature and simply enjoy the present moment.

Despite the long travel time, Calaguas Island easily became one of the most beautiful beaches I've visited in the Philippines.

Meals Included in Our Resort Package

One of the conveniences of booking the Calaguas White Sand Resort package was that all our meals were already included.

Lunch
· Laing
· Ginataang Crab
· Fried Chicken
· Fresh Melon

Merienda
· Ginataang Bilo-Bilo

Dinner
· Ginisang Ampalaya
· Nilagang Buto-Buto
· Grilled Pusit
· Fresh Mango

The food was simple, comforting, and satisfying after a day of traveling.

A Few Things to Know Before You Go

Our welcome drink was served with ice, so we assumed cold drinks would always be available throughout our stay. We quickly learned otherwise.

Only room-temperature mineral water was provided during meals. If you want ice or cold drinks, you'll need to buy ice from one of the small sari-sari stores on the island. We tried keeping ice in our tumbler, but without a cooler, it melted quickly. Eventually, we accepted that warm drinks were simply part of the island experience.

It's a small detail, but something worth knowing before your trip.

Final Thoughts

Travel rarely goes exactly as planned, and that's often what makes every journey unforgettable.

From delayed buses and missed call times to searching for our boat operator at the busy port, our trip had its fair share of unexpected moments. Yet those little challenges became part of the story we'll always remember.

Calaguas Island reminded us that the best adventures aren't always the easiest. Sometimes, delayed buses, unexpected detours, and long travel hours make finally reaching your destination even more rewarding.

For us, every mile and every wave crossed was absolutely worth it.

5-Day Daet and Calaguas Island Itinerary with Senior Citizens: Family Summer Adventure + Budget Guide

Growing up, I was very familiar with Bicolano cuisine. I love dishes cooked with coconut milk, and pili nuts have always been one of my favorite snacks. In fact, I prefer pili nuts still in their shells over the sweetened varieties. Despite my love for Bicolano food, I had never visited the Bicol Region because I wasn't a fan of long land trips. The idea of spending more than 10 hours on a bus was enough to make me postpone the trip for years.

Everything changed when my mom told me that they were planning a family trip to Paracale to visit her friend and explore nearby destinations. At first, I was undecided. My son's Recognition Day had not been announced yet, I was concerned about our travel budget, and the thought of a long bus ride was not exactly appealing.

Eventually, I agreed to join the trip, but I told my mom that I wasn't particularly interested in Paracale. What I really wanted was to visit Calaguas Island. It had been on my travel bucket list since my early blogging days, but I never pursued it because of the long journey and limited electricity on the island.

Fast forward to this year, and it finally happened. Thanks to AI, planning the trip was surprisingly easy. It helped me organize possible routes, activities, and expenses despite having only a few days to prepare.

The trip was planned almost spontaneously:

Day 1: I agreed to join.
Day 2: I created our itinerary.
Day 3: We finalized everything and booked our tickets, hotel, and resort.

My original plan was to travel from Manila to Naga, explore the city, and then continue to Daet for Calaguas Island. However, my mom preferred a direct Manila-to-Daet route.

So here’s our 5-day Daet and Calaguas Island itinerary from our summer vacation.

Our 5-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Cubao to Daet
Day 2–4: Calaguas Island
Day 5: Daet to Cubao

We purchased our one-way bus tickets online for PHP 1,046.57 per person. Buying online was more expensive than purchasing directly at the terminal. I also forgot to avail of the student discount for my son, and since the tickets were already paid for online, the bus station could no longer process a refund.

A few days later, my husband decided to join the trip after his leave was approved. He booked a night bus with a restroom onboard for PHP 1,146.

For our morning trip, the bus actually left Cubao earlier than scheduled. The supposed 10-hour trip stretched to almost 12 hours due to multiple stopovers and heavy traffic, not including our travel time from home.

We had lunch at the DLTB Quezon stopover. Budget around PHP 200 per person for a meal with rice and drinks, plus PHP 10 for restroom use.

By the time we arrived, we were exhausted from the long journey. Still, I couldn't complain because my husband had an even more stressful experience. His scheduled bus trip was canceled, and passengers had to wait nearly three hours at the terminal for a replacement bus. Because of the delay, he missed our scheduled boat trip the next morning.

For dinner, we ate at the restaurant of One Platinum Hotel.

Hotel and Transportation

For our first and last nights in Daet, I booked 3 rooms at One Platinum Hotel. We only wanted a standard room, but on our first night, there were only two left.

Stay

     Room

    Cost

First night

    2 Standard Rooms

    PHP 2,800/room

First night

    1 Deluxe Room

    PHP 3,350

Last night

    3 Standard Rooms

    PHP 2,800/room + PHP 900 extra person

The hotel is only one tricycle ride away from the DLTB terminal. Since the senior citizens in our group were not comfortable riding tricycles, a relative suggested using their van and driving us around during the trip.

At the end of the trip, the transportation arrangement cost PHP 18,000. Looking back, the transportation arrangement was more expensive compared with using local tricycles. However, for the senior citizens, the convenience and comfort were worth the extra cost.

The local transportation in Daet was quite affordable. Based on the rates I discovered during our trip, a tricycle ride from One Platinum Hotel to Vinzons Port would likely cost around PHP250–400 per trip, depending on the number of passengers and the arrangement with the driver. Our tricycle ride from the hotel to the DLTB terminal only cost PHP20 per person.

The van was used for:

Day 1: DLTB Terminal to One Platinum Hotel
Day 2: One Platinum Hotel to Vinzons Port
Day 4: Vinzons Port to One Platinum Hotel
Day 5: One Platinum Hotel to Paracale Tour (for the seniors)

Day 2: Arrival at Calaguas Island

After an early breakfast at the hotel, we traveled to Vinzons Port for our 7:00 AM call time. With the rented van, travel time was less than 20 minutes.

Upon arrival, we met the boat operator and completed the passenger manifest. Our boat departed at 7:55 AM, unfortunately, without my husband. He arrived at the port just as our boat was leaving.

Fortunately, the boat operator assured us that he could take the next available trip, which fortunately happened, since it was a weekend and more boats were operating that day.

My husband paid PHP 100 for a tricycle ride to Vinzons Port after asking the bus conductor to drop him off nearby.

For our stay, we booked a 3-day, 2-night package at Calaguas White Sand Resort. The package cost PHP 11,500 per person and included:

· Roundtrip boat transfers
· Environmental fee
· Terminal fee
· Processing fees
· Accommodation
· Full-board buffet meals

I'll be sharing a separate detailed review of the resort soon.

The resort offers several activities, including island hopping, trekking, massage services, volleyball, and kayaking.

We chose island hopping. The joiner rate was PHP 500 per person, but since we booked late, we ended up hiring a private boat for PHP 5,000. Since we were a group of seven, the private tour gave us more flexibility and was well worth the cost.

Our island-hopping itinerary included:
· Balagbag Island (add-ons - PHP 75 entrance fee)
· Sandbar
· Snorkeling site near Balagbag Island

It was one of the most memorable parts of our trip; slow-paced, relaxing, and exactly the kind of island experience we had been hoping for.

Our return boat trip was delayed due to low tide. Because of this, we also arrived late at the bus station and discovered that all bus trips for the day were already fully booked. My husband had no choice but to extend his stay for another night. Secretly, I didn't mind because it meant we could travel back to Manila together.

We purchased our tickets for the next day's trip to Cubao. The bus fare was PHP 943 per adult and PHP 758 for students, which was cheaper than the one-way tickets we had purchased online from Cubao to Daet.

From the DLTB terminal, we rode a tricycle to One Platinum Hotel. The driver asked for PHP 70 for three passengers, and I found out that my brother and sister-in-law only paid PHP 20 per head on their tricycle ride, so rates may vary depending on the driver.

After checking in, we headed to Alvino's Roast, Grill & Fry for an early dinner.

We started the day with an early breakfast and a quick pasalubong shopping trip.

Our stops included:
· Daet Market for pili nuts with shells
· Graceland for pastries
· Jannah's Pasalubong for local delicacies and souvenirs

Conveniently, all of these were within walking distance of the hotel.

For lunch, we had originally planned to try another restaurant, but we were too tired to go out again, so we ended up eating at the hotel restaurant.

We checked out early and rode a tricycle to the DLTB terminal for PHP 20 per person.

One thing we learned: there's no need to arrive too early at the terminal. The waiting area is limited, and passengers are only allowed to board shortly before departure.

The return trip took almost 12 hours again, reminding us that the journey to Bicol is truly part of the adventure. Ironically, the senior citizens traveling from Paracale to Cubao arrived faster than we did.

Final Thoughts

Our first land trip across the Bicol Region turned into a real adventure.

From a 12-hour bus ride to Daet, a 30-minute van trip to Vinzons Port, and another two hours by boat to Calaguas Island, the journey was long but absolutely worth it.

For three days, we experienced island life without phone signals, Wi-Fi, or half-day electricity. Instead, we enjoyed quality family time, beautiful beaches, and unforgettable memories.

Although we didn't get the chance to fully explore Daet, the trip gave us something more meaningful than a checklist of destinations. We came home with bags full of pili nuts, new memories with family, and the happiness of finally setting foot on Calaguas Island after years of dreaming about it.
