Recognition Day 2024

In my previous post, I mentioned na parang nakakaloka yung emotion namin kasi up and down. On the second day of my late mother-in-law’s wake, it was my son’s Recognition Day. While we were waiting for the program to start, I saw my teary-eyed husband so I told him to clear his head for a few hours because this moment is for our son. It is hard when we are in pain but we need to show up.

When my son made it to the overall top last year, I told him that maintaining to be on top is not easy but my son proved to us that he can do it. Actually, my son told me na 5th honor dapat siya but extracurricular is part of the final grade computation so he ended up with sixth honor. Regardless of the ranking, we are still proud of him because he worked hard for it.

This year, my son received 3 medals; Sixth Honor, Gold Eagle Awardee, and Special Conduct Award for Male. I was not surprised with this award but happy kasi na notice na rin yung pagiging good student niya ng teachers. Introvert kasi anak ko so madalas hindi naman siya kilala ng mga teachers except for his subjects teachers.

After the Recognition Day, we just went to the mall to eat lunch and buy cake. We ate at Ben’s Halo-Halo x Meshiya and ordered Classic Spaghetti PHP174, Shio Ramen PHP230, BBQ Ribs P280, California Maki PHP230, and Iced Tea PHP50 each. Cake is from Contis which is Banana Dream.

We are in a hurry kasi we need to go back to the wake. May mga ex-officemates nga si hubby na nakiramay kaso nasa Recognition Day pa kami. Yung Recognition celebration, sa wake na rin nangyari and we just ordered a Family Feast Bundle from Shakey’s.

Of course, I made “Congrats Cards”, using one design but different cardstock. For the Congrats Cake Topper, I used Birthday Verygood Font which I also used in my graduation cake toppers.

Eye Check-Up in Times of COVID19 Pandemic

Almost two years had passed and until now, we still have community quarantine restrictions. And because of this pandemic, a lot of my plans have been affected and canceled and to be honest, I felt stressed about the things that I cannot do because of the COVID19 restrictions. There are so many plans that I delay because I am afraid to go out but I realized that if I will wait for this pandemic to be over, wala na ko magagawa. So I need to learn to live with this virus.

My son and I need to visit our ophthalmologists. For the longest time, my son has been complaining that he is having a hard time reading the subtitle on TV so he really needs to change his eyeglasses. He changes his eyeglasses every year but because of the lockdown, our appointments were canceled last year. I didn’t reschedule his appointment because I am still afraid to go to the hospital.

But after our COVID19 Vaccine and Pneumococcal Vaccine, I decided to have an eye check-up but not with our doctors, we just went to Starfinder Optical Shop. I learned about this optical shop 3 years ago so nakailang pagawa na rin kami ng eyeglasses dito. We just gave them the prescriptions from our ophthalmologist. But last weekend, doon na rin kami nagpacheck. Since kids are not allowed inside the mall yet my husband called Starfinder to make an appointment, we just printed the letter (from Viber) and presented it to the guard.

Good thing that we are the first patients kasi limited din pala ang number of people sa loob. They have 2 doctors naman so in less than an hour, natapos na kami. I was surprised with our result, sobrang laki lang ng tinaas ng grade namin, -75 (each eye) sa anak ko and -50 (each eye) sa akin. The most shocking part is the price of the lens, OMG sobrang laki ng tinaas ng price.

It was year 2015 when we discovered that my son has eye problems so eyeglasses are part of our yearly expenses. For the first few years, we just ordered from his pedia-ophthalmologist and we always received an authenticity card so kahit noong nagpagawa na kami sa iba, Crizal brand na rin ang pinagagawa namin,

Since 2015, my usual expenses for his eyeglasses is more or less PHP6,000 (frame + lens). Just two years ago, I only paid PHP3,900 for my son's lens so halos mahimatay ako nung nalaman ko na PHP10,500 na yung Airwear Clear Lens niya. Yung gamit ko na Crizal Prevencia Lens is PHP5,900 na so I went back to Crizal Eyezen Max kasi PHP4,900 lang. From their record kasi, my son is using Airwear and I checked our authenticity card, Airwear nga nakalagay.

The only difference is the material, Airwear is made of unbreakable polycarbonate material so kahit mabagsak ng anak ko hindi daw ako magworry. But I forgot that my son is already a teenager and online classes naman so less yung chances na mabagsak kasi wala PE classes. PHP10,500 is so steep so medyo sinisisi ko sarili ko bakit nagAirwear pa rin anak ko. Lol. I’m thankful that I saved the 20% discount voucher which I got from them two years ago and may 50% discount sa frame na napili ng anak ko so naless ng gastos kahit papaano.

Benefits of Crizal Prevencia Airwear Refractive Index 1.59

Unbreakable polycarbonate material
Anti-reflection
Scratch resistance
Dust and water repellence
Smudge repellence
Blue light protection
Front and back UV protection

I thought I was able to save money because he didn’t change his eyeglasses last year pero ganun din pala ang gastos ko kasi tumaas ang price. Waah! I also noticed na patagal ng patagal yung pick-up time sa Starfinder. Two years ago, 9 days lang, now 17 days bago namin makuha.

Update: We got our eyeglasses, 6 days after our visit so hindi naman inabot ng 17 days.

Officially a Quaranteen

Time is slipping away and we just celebrated my son’s 13th birthday and until now, I can’t imagine that my baby boy is now a teenager. I started this blog when he was only two years old, I used to document his milestones and other childhood memories but some of those blog posts are now private. I hope someday, I can find the time to print those blog posts para hindi naman sayang ang photostory. I think it would be a nice gift or souvenir that I can give to my son when he hits legal age.

But before the legal age, teenage years muna, I still can’t believe that it has been 13 years since my son came into this world. I'm forever grateful to God for blessing me with my one and only son. I did not plan to stop working but when I had him, my plans changed. Watching him grow up has been the best decision and experience of my life. Honestly, I really miss my son’s toddler and childhood years kasi when he hit tween, slowly nagkakaroon na ng sariling mundo.

Anyway, since 13 is a huge milestone for us, I asked my son what his birthday theme? He paused a bit and said “games?”. Well, he was spending more time with games since the start of the pandemic so “Gamer” theme kami. It’s been a long time since we had a birthday theme, I shared them on this post “Birthday Party Theme for Boys”. When he was 10 years old, I planned to prepare for a Pokemon Birthday Party pero hindi ko natuloy but this time, I make time for his Quaranteen Birthday Celebration.

It took me a week to prepare his DIY Gamer Party theme because I did everything from scratch. I used to search for FREE party printables on Pinterest but now I’m proud to say that I can make my own printables too. I will share that in a separate blog post.

First, I designed his birthday cake topper “Ethan is Now a Teen”, this is much better compared to the birthday cake topper that I made last year. I already invested in my craft materials so I can do more. Then I also designed his birthday cards, gift tags, cupcakes or food toppers, souvenir stickers, party hats and banners.

Then for the food, his only request is steak so I bought Meltique Beef and Saikoro Wagyu Cubes. Then I prepared side dishes like mashed potatoes + gravy sauce, corn and carrots, buttered French beans, and asparagus. And for dessert, we had Contis Leche Flan and Banapple Banoffee Pie

For safety, I did not bother to invite my family or in-laws so it was just a party of three but I prepared simple food packs as my son’s loot bag. My husband delivered the food packs to my in-laws.

His birthday gift wish is another Nintendo Switch Game which is Scribblenauts Showdown. Ang dali lang wishlist ng anak ko ever since nagkaNintendo Switch siya, controller or games lang pinabibili niya. Hehehe!

Graduation 2021

I can’t deny that I was a little bit disappointed because we didn’t have a real graduation ceremony, and I won’t get to see my son walk across the stage like I always dreamed of. Graduation day is one important event for every student and parent, but because of this pandemic, we only have a virtual graduation and no graduation pictures.

I’ve been looking forward to this once-in-a-lifetime event, but life circumstances change, so I have no other choice but to accept and adjust my life. I cannot just stop my life and wait until this global pandemic ends. So even though this graduation is a little bit different, it is still worth celebrating. I have to remind myself that there are things that I can do even if I am stuck at home.

Last year, we didn’t have Recognition Day, so I’m still thankful for the Virtual Graduation. And I won’t let it pass without celebrating it, so last week, I was preoccupied because I made a graduation card, gift tag, banner, cake topper, sticks, and video.

For the food, I just ordered Paella Valenciana PHP1160, Lengua Sevillana PHP1000 and cold cuts from Alba Restaurante. I prepared my son’s favorite which is charcuterie, he likes the chorizo de bilbao, butifarra, salchichon and pamplona. My husband bought Limoncello Torte Cake, PHP1145 and Dinner Roll PHP112, from Contis.

While I was making my son’s graduation video, I couldn’t help but cry. It is so true that life goes by in the blink of an eye. I suddenly miss my son during his childhood years, and I can’t imagine na mukha na palang binata ang anak ko. I didn’t notice the big changes because we have been together 24/7 since the community quarantine started. All I knew was that his voice and height changed pero yung sa face, ang laki na pala ng pagbabago from grade 5 to grade 6 pictures. I’m grateful for the photos that I took because I have memories that I can always look back on.

I watched the graduation video for the nth time because it is a testament to how my son gets one step closer to his dreams. It seems like yesterday when he graduated from Kindergarten and he told me, “No Mommy, I want GOLD eagle”. Since then, I witnessed how my son strives to become better, and he keeps on beating his own grade. Little by little, he is learning, improving, growing, maturing, and working hard to achieve his goals.

That is the reason why I chose “The Climb” song for his video to remind him that “It’s not how he started, it’s how he finished”. I am so proud of him not only because he got the GOLD Eagle Award, but I’m proud of him because he keeps challenging himself. #beyourowncompetition Literal na climb kasi pataas ng pataas ang grade niya.

The Climb by Miley Cyrus

I can almost see it
That dream I'm dreaming
But, there's a voice inside my head saying
You'll never reach it

Every step I'm taking
Every move I make feels
Lost with no direction
My faith is shaking

But I, I gotta keep trying
Gotta keep my head held high

There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose
Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb

The struggles I'm facing
The chances I'm taking
Sometimes might knock me down, but
No, I'm not breaking

I may not know it
But these are the moments, that
I'm gonna remember most, yeah
Just gotta keep going
And I, I gotta be strong
Just keep pushing on, 'cause

There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose
Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb

Yeah

There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Sometimes you're gonna have to lose
Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb

Yeah, yeah

Keep on moving, keep climbing
Keep the faith, baby
It's all about, it's all about the climb
Keep your faith, keep your faith
Whoa

To my son, Congratulations, and always remember that I am always your number one cheerer and supporter. Do not be afraid to aim higher. We’re all rooting for you, so keep going and keep climbing.

12th Birthday

Time passes quickly and I cannot imagine that my son is already 12 years old. Next year, I already have a teenager. Woah! In a span of several months, a lot has been changed. My son is now taller than me, though hindi naman mahirap iachieve iyon but I am happy na hindi siya nagmana ng height sa akin. Hehehe! His voice changed already, parang namimiss ko yung maliit at matining niyang boses. We enjoyed rewatching his videos nung bata pa siya nga kahit naiinis siya pag pinapanood namin, parang hiyang-hiya siya sa mga ginagawa niya dati.

Read: 11th Birthday Celebration

I wish I could stop the time so he will be forever my baby but I also appreciate that he is growing and maturing na, especially this community quarantine and we are stuck at home. My son can do more household chores and he can study on his own. I thought mahihirapan ako this online class kasi baka ending ako rin ang magturo. But I’m glad, kaya na niya and if may questions man, nandito rin si hubby para magturo. How I wish, work from home na si hubby lagi. And because of that, I can still work part-time kahit nagstart na yung school year.

As expected, no travel, no hotel staycation, and no food trip because of community quarantine. So for my son’s birthday, naggrill lang kami ulit like nung birthday celebration ko. My son just wanted a lechen flan but I told my husband to buy a cake. Hubby bought Salted Caramel Cake P895 and Leche Flan P195 from Contis

The Salted Caramel Cake is a layered cake of butterscotch brownies, vanilla sponge cake, cream, dulce de leche, and ground cookies. It was our first time trying this cake, my two boys love this but I find it too sweet, ewan ko hinahanap ko yung lasa ng “Salted caramel” parang matamis lahat e. hehehe! Anyway, we all love Contis Leche Flan, one of our favorites na rin ito ever since nung natry namin, early this year.

And for my 3rd Cricut Project, I made a “happy birthday cake topper”. I just downloaded a SVG file from Pinterest, uploaded it to Cricut Design Space and Cut. Good thing that I have a free gold cardboard stock so I used it, pero mas okay sana kung may glitter card ako. But it turned out great naman, I like this better than the first “happy birthday cake topper”, kasi mas bagay yung size sa cake.

For gifts, my son just wanted a power bank. Oh di ba, binata na talaga, mga panggadget na ang request. Since my mom gifted him money, he asked his daddy to buy a Nintendo Switch game na multi-player daw. He listed 4 games and hubby bought the “Arms” game. Ang mahal ng Nintendo games noh?

School Field Trip 2019

Since last year my son kept on telling me that he will join his Field Trip on February and I kept on persuading him not to join his field trip because his daddy will have a business trip on that month. Mahirap magcommute ng madaling araw at gabi and we can visit those places naman kahit hindi field trip.

Then last month, the school gave the Field Trip form and when I read the itinerary, I still convinced my son not to join because I find the fee expensive, PHP1790. Ang mahal para sa Kidzania at National Museum, free lang naman yung ibang place. I even told him, yung P1790 na yun sobra pa sa Kidzania namin dalawa and whole day pa kami pwede magstay.

Kidzania Manila
National Museum of National History
McKinley Grand Canal - Walking Tour
Shrine of Jesus WTL (again)

But he really wanted to join and my husband wants my son to join too so ako lang naman talaga ang kontrabida sa buhay nila. My husband always tells me, iba ang lakad with classmates at iba ang lakad with family. Good thing that my husband is available on that day so hindi ko na problema maghatid at sundo. So I paid the Field Trip fee bago pa magbago isip ko. Hehehe!

P.S. As of this school year, the chaperone is allowed na if grade 1 to 3 ang bata. Grrr! I’ve been waiting for them to change this policy, ngayon pa talaga binago. Grade 4 na anak ko so hindi ko pwede sumama. Hayz…

Fast forward to his field trip…

Me: Ethan, don’t forget your passport ha.
Ethan: How about my credit card?
Me: ATM lang yun.
Hubby: Bakit may passport pa at card, san punta niyan?
Me and Ethan: Kidzania.

Yes, may passport at ATM sa Kidzania. May driving license pa nga. Hehehe! I allowed my son to bring his smartphone in one condition “Take Photos”. While my husband and I were busy at PTAA Travel Tour Expo, my son sent one group photo at Shrine Of Jesus WTL so I felt happy at naalala ang bilin ko. So in my mind, this time marami na pictures anak ko sa Field Trip compared last year.

But I was wrong, after the field trip he showed me his phone gallery and guess what? Yung group photo lang ang may mukha niya. Puro painting sa National Museum. Waah! Nakalimutan na niya ang lahat ng bilin ko when they went to Kidzania Manila. So for the very first time, wala na siya tagakuha ng photos and videos. They stayed here from 1PM to 5PM and he was able to do 6 activities; Bank, Pit Crew Training Center, Cleaning Energy Center, Century Tuna Marine Research Lab, Driving, and Newswriter.  Check our Kidzania experience here.

Anyway, since Mckinley Grand Canal Tour is part of their itinerary. We decided to pick up our son at Venice Grand Canal Mall. So after our travel expo trip, we went straight to Venice. It was my first time there, so maganda naman pala. I remembered our trip in Venetian Hotel in Macau. There is a gondola ride but it is too expensive for my budget, P400 per person. Waah! Okay na ko sa tingin na lang, hehehe!

There are so many restaurants in Venice Grand Canal Mall and I saw the Isla Sugbu Seafood City and we’re supposed to eat here kaso sa pagod namin, gusto na namin umuwi agad. Maybe next time I can finally try this paluto all you can.

Brunch at Cafe Mary Grace

Since last week, my son was busy practicing for their Cheers and Yells. They have this yearly competition in their school from Grade 1 to Grade 6. I was not able to watch their past competition since there was no invitation, feeling ko for students lang. But after few years, I learned na pwede naman pala manood ang parents so I asked my son if he wants us to watch his competition. He said, “No, it’s embarrassing”. Kaloka, nahihiya na siya na ngayon, e since preschool nanonood naman kami.

My husband was free so we went to school to watch their Cheers and Yells, my son was surprised when he saw us in the Audigym, #stageparents hehehe! We’re happy to see his performance and to watch other grade levels performance too. How I wish, alam ko na pwede manood parents, sana since Grade 1 napanood ko para may pictures and videos. And bonus pa, nagchampion pa sila, they beat the Grade 5 and 6 level. Sulit yung pagbili ko ng white shorts for their costume. Second time na nila nagchampion. Pero first time daw nagchampion ang grade 4 since the year 1985.

Grade 1 (2015) - 1st runner up
Grade 2 (2016) - Champion
Grade 3 (2017) - No Cheers and Yells Competition
Grade 4 (2018) - Champion

After watching, it is time for errands but we decided to eat brunch first kasi magugutom na naman ko sa pila sa bank and SSS. We dropped by at Southwoods Mall just to eat, nag-iisip ako kung ano pa ba ang hindi namin nakainan sa Southwoods Mall and I remember Cafe Mary Grace. They recently opened a branch here. Yey!

The last time that we ate at Cafe Mary Grace was five years ago pa at Alabang Town Center branch. I remember that they don’t have rice meals, more on desserts and pasta sila so hindi na naulit. Just this year, I learned that they have a branch in Festival Mall so I was able to buy cheese roll and ensaymada pag napapadaan.

Yesterday, we had brunch at Cafe Mary Grace and I was glad that they already improved their menu. They have rice meals na rin. We ordered Seafood Pasta P350 and Sirloin Beef Tapa with Egg P398. There were only few diners so our orders were served after 15 minutes.

The Seafood Pasta is a medley of fresh clams, mussels, prawns, cream dory, squid with herbs, mushrooms, and olives. My husband said it was yummy and he finished everything and no doubt that it is one of the best sellers. I was surprised when I saw the Sirloin Beef Tapa, ang dami pala serving so it is good for sharing if you have kids na kasama. It has side dishes pa and sarap na sarap si hubby dun. I did not try it kasi hindi ko mahilig sa may vinegar na food except adobo and daing na bangus. The price is a little bit pricey buti na lang masarap food and service is good.

Update March 2019: Lunch at Cafe Mary Grace

Yey, finally school year 2018-2019 is already over. We attended my son's recognition because he got "Gold Eagle Award" and before we went home we dropped by at Southwoods Mall. We went straight to Cafe Mary Grace for our lunch, we ordered Pork Tocino P348, Spanish Sardines P358 and Seafood Pasta P390.

The last time we ate at Cafe Mary Grace (Festival Mall) was last November 2018 so I was really surprised when I saw their menu, there was P40 price increase na agad sa mga meals nila. Waah! Masakit na sa bulsa kumain sa Cafe Mary Grace.

My husband ordered seafood pasta before and he liked it very much so he wants to order it again. But I don’t want to eat rice meal so I told him to order other pasta na lang because I want to try the Seafood Pasta. Hehehe!

So he ordered Spanish Sardines & Olives, the pasta was cooked in spanish sardines, garlic, olive oil and topped with tomatoes and mushrooms. The taste is just okay, maasim daw masyado. He was able to finish the pasta but it is not something that he would order again.

My son ordered Pork Tocino with scrambled eggs and rice (choice of garlic rice or plain rice). This is part of their all-day breakfast menu, the meal includes homemade pickled mangoes, tomato wansoy salsa, and vinegar. My husband ate the side dish because that is his favorite too.

My son almost finished this meal, as in mga dalawang subo na lang ng kanin ang natira. I was really surprised because when I ate the Sirloin Tapa and Vigan Longganisa, hindi ko nga halos maubos so I thought pwede kami magshare ng anak ko if ever kasama na namin siya sa Cafe Mary Grace. Hindi pala. Toinks!

First Communion of my Son

Nowadays, interfaith marriage is very common so I know that I’m not the only one who belongs to mixed marriages. When I say mixed marriage, it means that the husband and wife have different religions or beliefs. I’m a Born Again Christian and my husband is a Catholic, we may have different beliefs but it was never an issue in our marriage. We don’t convince, persuade or force each other to convert. We do respect our own choices, beliefs, and values.

I was also a product of mixed marriages, my father is Protestant and my mother is a Born Again Christian and as we grow old we chose our own beliefs. So when it comes to my son, I give him the freedom to choose. As long as we believe in one God and we know that religion alone will not save us. But of course, I would be happy if we have the same belief.

Since last month, my son was preparing for his first communion, he was baptized in the Catholic church and also studying in Catholic School. Two weeks ago, he told that non-communicants are on vacation already.

Ethan: Mommy, non-communicants will not go to school starting Monday. December 11 na sila papasok.
Me: Talaga, one week yun. Ang haba ng bakasyon. Gusto mo bakasyon na rin tayo, wag ka na pumasok.
Ethan: Huh! I’m a Catholic e.

Natawa na lang ko, may paninindigan na pala anak ko. Don’t get me wrong, I’m just testing him. We already bought white longsleeves, nagphotoshoot na rin sila and we already invited my in-laws to attend my son’s communion.

The day before his communion, my son was asking me if I’m excited.

Ethan: Mommy, are you excited?
Me: Bakit?
Ethan: First communion ko.
Me: Kelangan ko ba maexcite? Are you excited?
Ethan: Yes, first communion ko yun. What’s the taste of the bread?
Me: Tasteless Hehehe!

Kaloka, curious pala siya sa lasa ng hostia

Fast forward to communion, we picked up my in-laws, and off we went to church. Sa sobrang aga namin, nakadalawang mass pa kami. lol! It was my first time witnessing communion. After communion, we went straight to Nina’s Kitchen to celebrate.

9th Birthday

And for just a fleeting moment, my baby is now a tween. His birthday marks a special day in my life because it is the day when I had him. It opened my life to a new journey and gave me chance to be a mom. Whenever I look at him I know that God has blessed me so much. He may be a tween now but in my heart, he will always be my little boy.

This year, we had a birthday staycation again. If you remember my post last year, my son enjoyed our stay at EDSA Shangri-la so this year, we booked the Wonderful Weekends Package of Makati Shangri-la. We were there during the Star Magic Ball so ang daming artista, nakibirthday sa anak ko. Hehehe!

Read: Birthday Staycation at EDSA Shangri-la

Fast forward to his birthday, he went to school while my husband and I went to Nuvali so we can buy his chocolate cake. He likes the chocolate cake of Contis so yun ulit ang birthday cake niya. Then we bought a gift at Toys R Us, I bought this “Bad Dog” toy, mahal pala siya. P999.75 and I got it at P799.75 kasi nakasale.

Before we left, we ate at Hokkaido Ramen Santouka, I will share our experience in a separate post.

After school, we sang “happy birthday”, and my son blew out the candle and opened his gift. He finished his assignment and off we went to Shakey’s. We had a simple dinner with my in-laws. Since may pasok yung iba, 11 lang kami present. Sulit yung “Ber Bundle” ng Shakey’s, sobrang dami ng food kasi naka-upgrade yung pizza, chicken n mojos and may free mojos supreme pa.
