10 Foods to Avoid Before Going to Sleep

Many people enjoy preparing a snack before they drift off to dreamland each night. Some individuals enjoy the ritual of enjoying their favorite beverage or snack as they prepare for bedtime. But if you want to enjoy a deep and restful night's sleep, Bunkers Melbourne, the bunk bed specialist, recommends that you avoid snacking on any of the following 10 foods that can interfere with your body's ability to get a deep sleep it deserves in order for you to wake up feeling rested and refreshed the next morning.

Candy and Sugary Foods

Foods loaded with sugar may provide your body with plenty of energy during the day, but you want your body to slow down and not speed up right before going to sleep.

Fried Foods

Take a pass on that fried chicken leg or plate of French fries right before retiring. Fried foods are difficult to digest and may cause you to wake up in the middle of the night with abdominal cramps, stomach aches or heartburn.

Alcoholic Beverages

Many people assume that since a drink or two often makes them feel sleepy, an alcoholic drink is a great before bedtime tonic. But alcohol actually makes your body dehydrated and causes a more shallow sleep pattern that wakes people up several times throughout the night.

Spicy Foods

That bowl of chili or chips dipped in taco sauce create an abundance of excess stomach acid. Instead of experiencing sweet dreams, consuming spicy foods before bedtime may have you waking up and reaching for an antacid to calm a rumbling stomach or uncomfortable feelings of heartburn.

Foods and Beverages with Caffeine

A steaming hot cup of coffee is a great pick me upper at the start of your day, but coffee and any other foods and beverages with large doses of caffeine won't do you any favors when it's lights out at the end of your day. The same goes for that piece of dark chocolate you've been saving, which is also loaded with caffeine that is counterproductive to a good night's rest.

Red Meat

Grabbing a hamburger or fixing a roast beef sandwich as a bedtime snack will prove to be a bad idea because red meat is high in both protein and fat, two ingredients that make your digestive system work all the harder. Putting extra stress on your digestive system right before falling to sleep will result in a much less restful and shallower sleep pattern that will have you groaning the next morning that you still feel tired.

Celery

Snacking on celery might seem like a good idea for those feeling slightly hungry before bedtime and want a low-calorie snack. But celery works as a diuretic, which means that it will irritate your kidneys and cause you to wake up in the middle of the night with the urge to urinate.

Ice Cream

Just like red meat, ice cream will place more stress on your digestive tract all through the night and it's loaded with fats and sugars. Research has also shown that snacking on sugary and fatty snacks before bedtime increases bad dreams.

Pizza

Save that extra slice of pizza pie for tomorrow's lunch rather than gulping it down before bedtime. In addition to the acid in the tomato sauce, pizza also contains high levels of grease, fat, and carbohydrates which will keep your stomach churning busily all evening.

Cereal

Most breakfast cereals are coated with a load of sugar, so even though the milk you pour into the bowl may have a calming effect, the sugar content will make your blood sugar level spike, not at all conducive to sweet dreams and a restful night in a Bunkers Melbourne bunk bed!

Disappearing Comments in Facebook

90% of my comments in Instagram were still disappearing and I already accepted the fact that I can’t connect and communicate with my few followers. But just this week, my comments and friends’ comments in Facebook were disappearing too. I was receiving notification that someone commented but when I check, I can’t read anything even my comments.

It is really frustrating! I search again for possible solution but the only choice is “report it to Facebook”. I did not do anything because I don’t think it will really solve the problem. There are several comments there and no one testified that it solved the problem. I hope this won’t happen again.

Hampas ni Habagat

No classes again today because of Habagat. Our province is already in state of calamity because of flood. I’m still thankful because despite the nonstop raining, we’re still safe and dry, though some parts of the subdivision have ankle deep flood.

It is hard to cook, wash dishes and use toilet because the water wasn’t draining fast but still no reason to complain because other people are experiencing worst situation.

FYI:

Basic Disaster Supplies Kit

-     Water (one gallon per person a day enough for 3 days).
-     Flashlight with extra batteries.
-     Fully charged mobile phone
-     Food (non-perishable food enough for 3 days)
-     Whistle to signal for help
-     Can opener
-     First aid kit
-     Radio (battery operated with extra batteries
-     Garbage bags with tape and plastic ties for sanitation.

Ghirardelli: Walnut Brownie Mix

Classes have been suspended so I was able to blog today. Well, nothing much to share I just miss posting in my blog. After two months of not baking; yesterday, I baked Walnut Brownies from Ghirardelli.

After trying the triple chocolate brownie  and cookie mix, I became hooked so I kept on buying their instant mix. Oh yes, now I feel so lazy to bake especially baking from scratch so I was really thankful for instant mixes.

My husband and son were both happy because I baked again. They missed my pastries kahit instant pa yan. Hehehe! As expected we love the walnut brownies.

How to Have an Amazing Family Getaway in Amsterdam

Amsterdam may not seem an obvious holiday for families to choose given some of the activities you can get up to in the city, but it is actually a children’s paradise should you give it a chance. From the lack of traffic, quirky buildings and beautiful winding canals, it can be a captivating place for the small ones. There are also some great attractions for you to visit as a family in the city, and here is a guide to some of the best ones on offer.

NEMO

On the outside, you might think this odd green, ship like building couldn’t possibly be a museum but NEMO is a brilliant attraction to keep the kids entertained. Located on the eastern harbor, the science museum has lots of interactive exhibits which children love. If you’re flying the whole family out also, it’s a great idea to search for flights to Amsterdam online.

They can attempt to draw pictures with a laser, work out the anti-gravity trick with mirrors or visit the labs around the site where they can discover the answers to questions such as how do you make cheese? There is also the summer terrace on the top of the building which offers visitors some fantastic views of the medieval center of Amsterdam.

Anne Frank

If you have teens traveling with you and they have read the Diary of Anne Frank, then you can stop in at the Anne Frank House for them to explore where the literature was created. The museum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Netherlands, meaning that the adults will appreciate the exhibits focusing on how the Jewish community hid from Nazis during World War II.

Tropenmuseum

One of the star attractions of Amsterdam, the Tropenmuseum is home to three floors of colonial artifacts that are presented with some great imagination and a fair bit of multimedia. Certain sections of the museum are recreated in their original environment such as the African Market or the Central Asian Yurts.

Kids will love the displays in their colorful settings and ritual masks on display as well as the section dedicated to educating children. The museum also houses two cafes serving international food and a gift shop that the young ones can explore.

VondelPark

If you find that the kids have too much energy for you to bring them around some of the attractions on offer in the city, then you can head over to VondelPark where the wide open green spaces will be the perfect location for them to run around and play. Head over to the Het Groot Melkhuis cafe where you can sit and enjoy some refreshments while you watch over the children playing in the adjoining playground.

 Amsterdamse Bos

Another great way to spend the day is to head over to the Amsterdamse Bos where you will find a vast range of lakes, woods, and meadows for the kids to explore. There is also a small goat farm here where the children can come and feed and pet the cute animals.

He Loves to Draw

If you’ve been a regular reader of this blog, you are aware that my son loves to scribble. He scribbles everywhere, even on our walls, furniture, and appliances. He also scribbles on his clothes and different body parts. Click here and here to read the story. Thank God that he already graduated, and he only uses paper now, so I always make a scratch pad. Click here to learn my DIY scratch pad.

I cannot say that he has talent in drawing, but all I know is that he loves to draw. So I just let him, and he even posts it on our walls. He will get scotch tape and stick his own artwork on our walls or just post it if he is using “Post It” paper just like this.

He dislikes reading and writing, but he enjoys doing his assignment if it is “read, copy, and draw the word”. Last month, he drew this and said, “Mommy, I want Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Birthday Party”. Two months to go pa birthday niya pero may theme na siya. =)

Twenty Things That Parents Should Teach Their Child

Nice post that I’ve found from FB.

1. Play a sport. It will teach you how to win honorably, lose gracefully, respect authority, work with others, manage your time and stay out of trouble. And maybe even throw or catch.

2. It is better to be kind than to be right.

3. Save money when you're young because you're going to need it someday.

4. Allow me to introduce you to the dishwasher, oven, washing machine, iron, vacuum, mop and broom. Now please go use them.

5. Pray and be a spiritual leader.

6. Don't ever be a bully and don't ever start a fight, but if some idiot clocks you, please defend yourself.

7. Use careful aim when you pee. Somebody's got to clean that up, you know.

8. Your knowledge and education is something that nobody can take away from you.

9. Treat your partner kindly. Forever is a long time to live alone and it's even longer to live with somebody who hates your guts.

10. Take pride in your appearance.

11. Be strong and tender at the same time.

12. A woman can do everything that you can do. This includes her having a successful career and you changing diapers at 3 A.M. Mutual respect is the key to a good relationship.

13. "Yes ma'am" and "yes sir" still go a long way.

14. The reason that they're called "private parts" is because they're "private". Please do not scratch them in public.

15. Peer pressure is a scary thing. Be a good leader and others will follow.

16. Bringing her flowers for no reason is always a good idea.

17. You will set the tone for the sexual relationship, so don't take something away from her that you can't give back.

18. A sense of humor goes a long way in the healing process.

19. Please choose your spouse wisely. My daughter-in-law will be the gatekeeper for me spending time with you and my grandchildren.

20. Remember to call your mother and father because they might be missing you.

Travel Inexpensively and Live Like a Local with AirBnB

Caroline is a writer on OnBetterTerms, AvantCredit’s blog. Avant is a personal loan provider operating in the United States.

I’m writing to you from Prague right now. Yesterday, I was in Vienna, and before that Budapest, Athens, and Chania on the island of Crete. I didn’t win the lottery to be able to afford this European trip. I just took advantage of the website AirBnB.

AirBnB is a service where regular people can list their apartments, extra rooms, or full homes for travelers to book. I’ve stayed in AirBnBs all over Europe and North America. Here’s what I’ve learned…

You save a lot of money when staying at an AirBnB

The average cost per night that I’ve spent on this trip has been around $50 USD per room. That means that since I travel with my partner, it’s only $25 a night per person. If you’ve ever tried to travel cheaply at hostels, you’ll probably know that the price is per person, not per room — meaning the AirBnBs are not only more comfortable but more affordable. When you compare the AirBnBs to hotels in the area, you’re probably only paying a fifth of the hotel price. The same great location for much less than a hotel — plus, more amenities…

You save a lot of money by eating at your AirBnB

Because most AirBnBs give you access to a kitchen, I’ve saved a lot of money on food by cooking some meals at home and preparing lunches to take during the day’s sight-seeing. Being able to keep food in a fridge and make my own coffee in the morning means I’m not buying inflated convenience food in the tourist areas. Often our hosts share in their meal preparations too, further diminishing the costs. This leads me to my next point…

Your hosts are locals, so you live like locals

My travel style is to try to get immersed in the new culture and avoid tourist traps. Hotels are the same all over the world and you may never speak to a local if you stay in one. Your AirBnB host lives where you’re visiting and can give great tips about local spots that you’d never find in a travel guide. They’ll help you save money by telling you about the fantastic little restaurant off the beaten path so you can avoid the inflated prices on the main drag. They’ll know what entertainment is worth it, and they can help you navigate the public transit so you can save money on taxis.

With AirBnB, I’ve been able to afford to see some of the world’s most beautiful places. What’s more is that I met some lovely people and really experienced what living in these cities was like. What are your tips for frugal and authentic travel?

Buying Furniture at Mandaue Foam Home Store

Since March, we’ve been contemplating whether to customize the cabinet or buy a cabinet. I’ve been meaning to visit Mandaue Foam but we could not find the time and finally last Saturday we paid a visit.

Read: Shopping at Mandaue Foam Sta Rosa

The store is huge and we checked every floor looking for cabinet and drawer. Some cabinets were already sold so we settled for this one. We bought it at a regular price but I availed the Mandaue Foam Card (P500) to take advantage of the 10% discount.

The service is good and they even have softdrinks, juice and water dispenser for clients.

January 13, 2014:  Mandaue Foam Holiday Sale

I saw this Mandaue Foam Holiday Sale photo in my news feed last week so I asked my mom if she is interested to buy mattress since there’s no extra bed in my grandmother’s house where she would stay. She said yes so I informed my husband that I will go with him sa pagpapalit niya ng gulong in Alabang so I can buy mattress and pillows.

We were in Mandaue Foam last October, my mother-in-law bought buy 1 take 1 mattress P1500 and pillows P350. But it is no longer available so we bought the next size (double) for P2000. My son wanted to buy B1T1 pillows too, P300 for the smallest size and standard size is P350. They fold it so it will fit inside the car. I informed my friend about it and they bought a mattress too so if you are interested, go to Mandaue Foam and take advantage of the sale till January 6, 2014 only.

Update: July 2014: Bed and Mattress

When my son was 9 months old we decided to remove the bed frame and just place the mattress on the floor to have peace of mind that he will not fall from the bed. We’ve been sleeping on the floor for years already and I’ve been meaning to buy bed frame and mattress also. Now that my son is already five years old, I think this is the best time to be promoted. #ayawnasafloor

Last month we went to Mandaue Foam to check for bed and mattress. We checked the different design and when I saw this I was sold already. I don’t care if there’s no headboard because I wanted a bed frame with drawers to maximize the space. Since our room has limited space we can only buy queen size. (masikip na nga sa queen) For the mattress we chose Gala Bed Chiropractic, this is the description according to the Mandaue website.

Description: Incorporates the world’s most advanced spring system for added spinal support and maximum comfort.

Carry Capacity: Medium / HeavyComposition: Foam and Fabric backing with anti dust mite and anti-bacterial ticking

Height: 11½”

Mattress Layer

1. Cover – Multi-needle quilted to 28 Kg/m3 density foam and fabric backing with anti-dust mite and anti-bacterial ticking.
2. 1 – layer of 1 1/2” 35 kg/m3 high-density fire-retardant foam to add comfort.
3. Cover – Multi-needle quilted to 28 Kg/m3 density foam and fabric backing with anti-dust mite and anti-bacterial ticking.
4. 1 – layer of 3/4” 35 kg/m3 high-density fire-retardant foam to add comfort.
5. 1 – layer of 3/4” 35 kg/m3 rebonded foam for additional comfort.
6. Parallel plastic net to add protection over the pocketed coils.
7. 2.3MM single wire chiro springs made of anti-rust, high carbon steel wires.

So far we are happy with our bed and mattress and the only thing I dislike is, the mattress is too heavy for me that I'm having a hard time lifting it when I'm changing the bedsheet. hehehe By the way, if you want to have an additional 10% discount you can avail of the Mandaue Foam Card. Discount applies for regular items only.

Retuned Check: Error in Check

Two weeks ago I’ve made payment in SM Payment Center and last Tuesday I received a call from my bank. Actually, I did not answer the first two calls because the number was not in my contact, good thing that they called me again. Yes, I have this bad habit of not answering a call if it is not listed in my contact because I feel that it is just customer sales rep who will offer a credit card.

The branch manager informed me that I have an error in my check and she confirmed if I really wrote the check. She said it will be a returned check but she was so kind to give me a chance to correct the error. I have an error in my date; she said I wrote July 12, 20113 and the date should be July 12, 2013.

I composed a letter, printed two copies and asked my husband to fax the letter the following morning and I went to the nearest BPI branch to let them send the original letter to my branch. I was really nervous because I don’t want to pay returned check fee which is not cheap, I guess P2000 + will be the damaged.

So lesson learned:

1. Always answer the call.
2. Be careful in writing checks

Green Products

Last week my husband went home with these products and I was surprised to see that these products are made of recycled products. It is really nice to know that more companies are giving importance to our environment.

Absorbent Sponge

*It is made with 23% recycled materials
*It is made from 100% plant-based fibers
*It outlasts 30 rolls of paper towels
*It is reusable and long lasting.
*It is compostable in a compost facility tracking ASTM D6400

Scotch Magic Greener Tape

*It is made from over 75% recycled or plant-based materials.

Post-it Greener Notes

They look and stick like your regular post-it but it is made of 100% recycled paper and plant-based adhesives. This means that no new trees were used to make the paper. The plant material used to make the adhesive is a non-food plant that grows annually.

Being Prepared For Every Eventuality When Camping With the Family

Camping equipment is only part of the process when planning the perfect camping trip with the family. You need to consider where you are planning to camp and the time of the year that you are going to be in the tents. Making the trip enjoyable for everyone will ensure that the children have a brilliant time, and everyone wants to go camping in the future.

Some parents find the thought of camping with the children far too daunting; however if you are prepared it can be a fun trip. You need to ensure that you have plenty organized and that everyone knows what is expected of them whilst camping. Planning is essential and will guarantee that you have everything you need before setting off on the trip.

Once the camping equipment is all packed and ready, you can begin to pack the other essential items such as spare clothing, food, and first aid kits. No one wants there to be an accident whilst away, but these things do happen, and being prepared is essential. There are several different first aid kits to choose from, and you need to consider where you are camping, how long for, and your budget.

You need to think about all weather conditions and be ready for the weather to change without warning. There is nothing worse than being cold and wet whilst camping, which is why you need to pack clothes for every type of weather. High altitude camping can cause sunburn, and at night the temperatures are likely to drop.

Staying safe is not all about having the best first aid kit, and you need to ensure that you teach your children about the dangers of the great outdoors. There are several plants and trees that are poisonous, and your children need to understand that not everything is safe to touch. Animals can also be a threat depending on where you are camping, therefore, common sense is needed.

Stocking up on essentials is a fantastic idea, as you will be surprised how much water, food and basic items you use whilst away. You are better to have more than you need of these items rather than not enough. You want your children to enjoy the camping experience not complain that they were thirsty and hungry.

Sleeping in a tent should be a fun activity, which is why you need to ensure that there is enough space and that the bedding is comfortable. Everything is far brighter after a decent night’s sleep, which is why you need to have lots of fun activities to tire the children out, and a comfortable place to sleep.

Pack games, toys, cards and coloring kits to ensure that everyone has something to do whilst camping. The outdoors are fun, but after a while laying and reading, or coloring may be appealing to your children. You want them to have fun, explore the wilderness, remain safe and want to go camping again in the future.

These past few days had been very busy, hindi ko man lang naramdaman ang weekend. My son’s homework last Friday was to make a scrapbook from 0 month old till five years old so I spent most of my time looking for pictures. Spell S-T-R-E-S-S!

I have hundreds of photos and good thing that my folders are arranged per month and per year so it made my life easier but choosing pictures were not easy. After choosing the pictures, I write captions for each pictures #parangblog. =) We went to the mall to print the pictures and bought supplies for scrapbook. #napakagastosnahomework.

Anyway, sharing to you this easy dessert, actually I always use mango for this recipe but we only have banana at home.

Dinner at Yakimix

My mommy friend in school treated us last Saturday in Yakimix. Actually, we’re just teasing her last summer kung kelan ang victory party nila because her husband won last election. We’re not expecting na tototohanin naman niya so when she asked us if we are available for dinner in Yakimix, we immediately said yes.

She called Yakimix for reservation but no more reservation for the weekend so we went there as early as 5PM. Rain or shine we went to Yakimix – Alabang. I always hear and read mixed reviews about Yakimix so I never dare to try this restaurant. The branch in Alabang Town Center is not that big and I was not impressed with the food choices compared to other eat all you can restaurant. My son who only ate ice cream and ebi tempura were charged P380 already. #lugi

My plate, shared pa kami ng son ko sa tempura. Dessert: ice cream and leche flan lang.
smokeless grill

Verdict.

1. Though the restaurant is small, it is clean and organized.
2. The food choices are quite limited compared to the other branch. My husband tried Yakimix - MOA.
3. The service is quite different, the wait staff is only there to refill the food and your drinks. I tried other buffet restaurants and the wait staff will tell us pa, “Ma’m if you need anything, just call me, I’m (insert name)”. Then pag-nauubusan ka ng ebi tempura or fresh shrimp, mag-offer pa sila, “Sorry Ma’m bilis maubos, dalhan ko na lang kayo sa table niyo”.

Good thing that I did not pay anything for this dinner because P660 (dinner) and P75 (drinks) are not cheap. I do hope they will improve their customer service.

The Best Movie I’ve Ever Seen

We’re supposed to watch movie yesterday but I wasn’t feeling well maybe because of lack of sleep and my husband wanted to rest too after their trekking last Friday.

So we had movie marathon yesterday, my husband chose “3 Idiots” and I was hesitant to watch this because I thought it was a nonsense movie and I don’t even know the artist. But after few minutes I got interested and hooked. It was just an ordinary story of three college students who wanted to finish Engineering but each student has different story to tell.

This movie is full of fun, adventures, touching scenes and life lessons. I laughed, I cried, I laughed and I cried again while watching movie and for the first time I watched a movie for three hours without boring moment.

“3 Idiots is a 2009 Indian comedy-drama film directed by Rajkumar Hirani, with a screenplay by Abhijat Joshi, and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. It was loosely adapted from the novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat. 3 idiots is the "Highest grossing Bollywood movie of all time."”- Wikipedia

I do encourage you to watch this movie because you will learn a lot. It will inspire and motivate you. The best movie I've ever seen. Sharing to you some memorable lines and scene.

Give me some sunshine,
Give me some rain,
Give me another chance,
I wanna grow up once again...

We learnt something about human behaviour that day, It feels bad when a friend fails, but it feels even worse when he comes first.

A loud fart is respectable... A medium fart is tolerable... A slight fart is fearful... A silent fart is unbearable...!

"A for apple B for Ball, D for Donkey ....S for Screwed"

Farhan Qureshi: Today my respect for that idiot shut up. Most of us went to college just for a degree. No degree meant no plum job, no pretty wife, no credit card, no social status. But none of this mattered to him, he was in college for the joy of learning, he never cared if he was first or last.

Virus: Life is a race. If you don't run fast, you'll get trampled.

Rancho: All is well!

Rancho: Pursue excellence and success will chase you

Rancho: Make your passion your profession, and work will become a game.

Rancho: These engineers are very smart sir, they didn't invent a machine which can measure the pressure on the brain. If they had, we would have come to know that this was not a suicide but a Murder.

Raju: Sir, I have learnt to stand up on my feet after having broken both my legs. This attitude has come with great difficulty. No sir, I can't. You may keep your job, and let me keep my attitude.

Rancho: This is college not a pressure cooker.

Rancho: Cramming may get you past 4 years in college but it will screw your next 40 years.

Rancho: Grades create divide. A=Masters, C=Slaves

Virus: Life begins with murder. If you don't compete, you will die.

Rancho: That day I understood that this heart scares easily. You have to trick it, however big the problem is. Tell your heart, 'Pal, all is well. All is well.'

Raju: Does that solve the problem?

Rancho: No, but you gain courage to face it.

Machine Class Professor: Why are you back?
Rancho: Sir, I forgot to take something...
Machine Class Professor: What?
Rancho: Instruments that record, analyse, summarize, organize, debate and explain information which are illustrative, non-illustrative hardbound, paperback, jacketed non-jacketed with forward introduction, table of contents, index that are indented for the enlightenment, understanding enrichment enhancement and education of the human brain through sensory root of vision... sometimes leisure
Machine Class Professor: [confused] What are you trying to say?
Rancho: Books sir! I forgot to take my books.

Virus: On the first day, you asked me a question " Why did't astronaut use pencils in space. If a pencil tip breaks, it will float in zero gravity, get into eyes, nose, everywhere. You were wrong, you were wrong,  you couldn't be right all the time. You understand?
Rancho: Yes Sir.
Virus: This was an important invention. You understand? My director said, When you find an extraordinary student, (put the pen in Rancho's shirt) Go study. Pass your exams and leave.
